Pretty nifty if you want to record both midi and audio at the same time, but a bit of a pain if you just want to capture just the audio itself. However, now that I have to arm the vst track for the synth to sound over midi, it records the midi on the vst track as well as the audio routed to the other track. I guess it was just too quiet to show up visually along with my speakers being too quiet, when I did manage to set it up properly to record.

Yes, that song template I put up did work. It's probably about the most basic thing you can do, but I just can't figure it out. Here's a similar post where the op was trying to do what I am and he got it figured out, but the last post is from someone like me that can't get it to work either.

I know that Reaper handles these duties much better than the competition coz I have templates set up to record in my external hardware - nothing can do it as well as Reaper, not S1, not Ableton, nothing, so what stupid mistake am I making here?

I've really been getting back into Reaper again, but 3 hours to figure out how to record an audio track? Weird. I've done all the routing that everyone has suggested, and I've played about quite a bit too. I know all about takes and freezing and all that malarkey (been using Reaper since it came out). I want to do this specifically because I want to use a controller to record drums in live and edit the wav later. It's pretty simple what I am trying to do: I want to record the audio output from a vst on track 1, to a separate audio track on track 2, live. I've rtfm and searched and still I can't get it to work. You'll probably laugh, but I just spent 3 hours this evening trying to figure out how to record to an audio track.
